Nutro Dog Food Recalls (4 to 1)

Nutro, one of the most popular brands of pet food, has had more than its fair share of controversy in recent years. In 2007, Nutro recalled its Premium Adult Cat Food due to low thiamin levels. In 2008 the company recalled several varieties of its dry pet food due to possible salmonella contamination. Those recalls came after Nutro had a massive recall in 2007 for Chinese-made pet food. Now comes the latest recall, announced on Apr. 19, 2012.

The recall involves Nutro Natural Choice Large Breed Adult Dog Food. A limited number of bags of the food have been pulled from store shelves because of possible exposure to Aflatoxin. Aflatoxin is a naturally occurring mycotoxin produced by fungus and can be found in grains like corn and wheat. At high levels, it can cause illness or death in pets, although Nutro said no illnesses have been reported.

Nutro said it has tested the food and no Aflatoxin was found. Still, the company is recalling the affected batches out of an abundance of caution. The recalled food is marked with a production code with the first four numbers 06, followed by four numbers representing the date 06/02/12. The suggested retail price is $37.99 for a 30-pound bag.
